Last Day....

At one o'clock in the afternoon , my eyes want to close and just let me fall into blissful sleep.... the legacy of too long in one time zone! However, my venturing into this new time zone means that I am not sleeping at that hour!

Yesterday... what a ride! From the Earls of Orkney at Birsay, right up the top of the Mainland Orkney down to Inverness...  Orkney is the place to find ancient history. Out on a tiny island called Birsay, which can be reached at low tide across a rock path, you can see the ruins of the Viking village. There is also evidence of the Picts living there. gazing straight across from that island is a once majestic castle that was owned by a bastard son of James 4 of Scotland. Today it remains  a monument to the tyranny and cruelty to Robert Stuart. St Magnus' Church sits near. Otters played in the blue waters of the bay. Travelled around the top and back down to Kirkwall, ready to get the ferry back to John O'Groats. At a fascinating little place, not far from the ferry stand two of the old World War Two  Nissan huts . The Italian prisoners of war had constructed a chapel on the island of Lambs Holm. The Italian Chapel is a wonder and the spirit of peace and love with which it was constructed may be seen so vividly..
Had to stop at the little shop there too. I had forgotten to buy me s present! With the knowledge of the amazing sheep of Ronaldsy( an island of Orkeny) I wanted a woolly memory that was not attributed to other things.... These sheep live on seaweed and they graze on the rocks. They are tough little beasties and can be traced back to very ancient times. Seaweed Eating sheep give beautiful wool so I can have a warm scarf!
Time for the ferry and many miles to go!

Did you know that the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean have height difference of one metre? Where they meet, across the water near Orkney, can be seen a a huge turbulent area...
